fragte der amerikanische Autor John Updike den Journalisten, der ihn gefragt habe, ob er schon mal etwas von Elfriede Jelinek gelesen hatte, die das Stockholmer Komitee gerade mit dem Nobelpreis bedacht hatte. Und wieder einmal nicht ihn selber, einen der grössten Romanciers in der amerikanischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Jetzt ist es zu spät. John Updike starb heute, im Alter von 76 Jahren, an Lungenkrebs. Wikipedia ist brutal aktuell und die englische wie die deutsche Seite ist schon mit dem Todesdatum aktualisiert worden...aus ist wurde war. War stets ein Kandidat für den Nobelpreis, hat ihn aber, wie so viele grosse Autoren, nie bekommen könnte man ergänzen..

Ich habe über John Updike eine Proseminararbeit geschrieben und neben dem Romanautor auch einen Meister der Kurzgeschichte kennen gelernt. Seine Sammlungen "A & P", "Pigeon Feathers", "Olinger Stories" und "The Music School" gehören zu den besten short stories, die ich je gelesen habe.

Clint Eastwood jr. wird im Mai 79 Jahre alt. Müde ist der alte Mann allerdings überhaupt nicht. Er gehört zu den wichtigsten Regisseuren des gern gescholtenen Hollywood-Kinos.

In Changeling (in Deutschland am 07.11.2008 angelaufen unter dem Titel "Der fremde Sohn"; Schweden-Premiere vergangenen Freitag) Eastwood tells a true story.
