The History of the Cross
In December 1693, the two sailors and Adam Neundlinger John Kräml "at large of ice water and hergeronnenem" wood from the Danube caught, they garnered a rather large and heavy wooden cross to the mainland. They wanted to chop together to burn because they noticed that the image of the crucified Christ was painted. To protect the cross from the weather, one set up a log cabin, so we wanted to build a chapel.
1701 ordered the then Bishop of Passau, Cardinal Johann Philipp Graf von Lamberg, an, dass das Kreuz in die St.-Johannis-Kapelle (jetzt Pfarrkirche) zu bringen sei. Der hochw. Herr Johann Albrecht Josef, Freiherr von Oedt, Pfarrer in Hartkirchen, hat am 4. Juni 1701 diesen bischöflichen Auftrag ausgeführt. Seither prangt dieses geschichtlich bemerkenswerte Kreuz, von einem Strahlenkranz umgeben, bis zum heutigen Tag über dem Hochaltar. Kreuz und Strahlenkranz sind allerdings schon sehr reparaturbedürftig.
Möge allen Besuchern und Wohltätern dieses Gotteshauses das "Donaukreuz" ein Zeichen des Segens sein!
